Broken For A Purpose

Picture a glow stick. Unbroken. Not glowing. Just a tube with a weird substance in it. Useless, right? Not the worst case but it doesn’t have a purpose without being broken. To be what it was designed to be, it must be broken to glow, to be a light.

Like the glow stick, sometimes we must be broken to see that God has made us to be a light, to shine, to live. We go through seasons our whole life. Some better than others. Like the seasons of this earth we will go through summer, fall, winter and spring. Constantly going through different seasons— a never ending cycle of challenges and change. We go through summer and winter, sometimes all in one week. We can experience a season of summer with warmth, sunny skies, closeness with God, joy, happiness. Or winter. Cold, miserable, confusing, bitterness, freezing wind, shoveling snow (yuck) you get the point, it’s awful. But how we handle each season is such an important thing. Are you praising God or cursing his name and asking why. Asking why we go through pain or why things just don’t make sense. Or are you praising his name through it all. A wise thing to do is to self examine how you are handling the season you’re in. God doesn’t call us to be perfect. We are by no means, none, perfect in anyway. But he does call us to live in closeness with him. To be in constant pursuit of him through every season, no matter how hard. So sometimes in order to get out of the dark tunnel of winter, we have to be broken to give off light to see a way out.

You will be broken in this life. It may sound harsh but it’s going to happen. Hurt will come but take heart. Your problems that are real and cause you pain are still of this world. That's the good news of Jesus, he has overcome this world. How so? He suffered and lived fully human. He died on the cross, the most horrific death to save you from your sins. It's this gift of salvation you could never earn, never purchase, and was given so freely to you and me. Nothing can shake you when you have built your life on him. The one foundation that never changes, never moves, and never gives way; the firm foundation of Jesus as our Eternal Rock.

Throughout the seasons we will be broken at times. But like the glow stick, we will be broken to shine. To come out of the darkness with hope and shining bright because of who we put our trust in. Someday soon, your brokenness will reveal your original design, it may take longer for some but your brokenness doesn’t end there.

You have a purpose and your winter doesn’t taint what your summer holds. Have hope. And in your brokenness, may you shine brighter than ever. For your hope is built on the one who created you to live IN the light even through your brokenness.

2 Corinthians 4:6

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.

 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
